It's not a talking presenter reading a script, and it's not an edit of footage you filmed. It's motion from a still, the simplest form of generated video and the one that's become genuinely useful for small business content.

The use case is straightforward: you have a photo, but a photo doesn't move. Video performs better on social platforms, but shooting video costs time, equipment, or money. A few-second motion version of an existing photo—a slow pan, a zoom, a subtle depth effect—bridges that gap without requiring a camera.

What these tools actually do

The category is simple but the outputs vary more than you'd expect:

  • Ken Burns effect and pans: taking a static image and simulating camera movement across it, a slow zoom or a pan from left to right. The motion is technically fake camera movement, not real object generation.

D-ID. Specializes in depth-based animation from still images, turning a flat photo into something that feels 3D without animating individual objects. Good for product photos and landscapes where a subtle "camera moving through" effect is all you need. Doesn't require a text prompt, just upload the image and it handles the motion.

HeyGen. Primarily known for talking avatars, but also offers image-to-video features for motion backgrounds and scene setup. Less of a primary tool in this category, more of an option if you're already paying for HeyGen for other video work and want to use it for motion generation too.

Pixar Optic (Pixverse). Lighter-weight option than Runway and Luma, with a free tier that lets you test before paying. Leonardo.ai. Built for AI art generation first, but also offers image-to-video features where you can upload an existing image and add motion. Strength is in working with illustrations and AI-generated art, less ideal for realistic photography.

Matching the tool to the image

The job matters more than the tool:

  • Product photo that needs subtle motion? Runway or Luma, depth-first. You want physically believable motion that makes the product feel dimensional without looking artificial.
  • Landscape or scenic photo where you want a "camera flying through" effect? D-ID or Runway's depth modes. The motion should enhance the sense of place, not distract.
  • AI-generated art or illustration that needs animation? Leonardo or Pixverse, which handle stylized motion better.

The prompt matters if the tool needs it

Tools like Runway that take a text prompt require specificity. "Make it move" produces a generic result across every tool. "Camera slowly pulls back to reveal the full frame, then zooms in on the logo at center" produces something you can actually work with.

Write prompts in direction language, not camera jargon. Instead of "4K 24fps panning left," write "camera moves slowly to the left, revealing more of the background." The model understands camera direction in plain language.

What to check before using it

Generated video from a static image can look convincing at thumbnail size and still be wrong in ways that jump out on a larger screen. Artifacts common in this category include:

  • Repeating patterns in a depth-expanded background (a brick pattern that glitches or repeats unnaturally).
  • Warping where the original image doesn't match the motion (if the motion implies 3D depth but the image was flat, the geometry won't hold together perfectly).

Test on the actual images you want to use, not demo images, before committing to a plan. A product photo and a landscape image might have very different results on the same tool, so knowing how the tool handles your specific images is worth the cost of a few test generations.

One test image tells you everything

Don't pick a permanent tool without testing your actual photo first. Pick a single image you actually need to animate—a product shot, a key moment from a campaign, a screenshot—and generate a motion version on your top two choices from the list above. Check whether the result needs heavy editing (it shouldn't), whether it looks artificial (it will a little, but not a lot), and whether you'd actually post it under your business's name as-is or if it needs another pass.
