Clueso Turns a Screen Recording Into a Tutorial Video Without an Editor
Clueso is an AI tool that turns screen recordings into tutorial videos and step-by-step docs automatically. Here's how it actually works, what it costs, and who it's not for.
Record yourself clicking through a feature once, narrating as you go, mistakes and all. A few minutes later you have a polished product video with a clean AI voiceover, zoomed-in callouts on the parts that matter, and a separate step-by-step help article written from the same footage. That's the pitch behind Clueso, an AI tool that turns screen recordings into tutorial videos and documentation without a video editor in the loop.
Clueso isn't new. It launched through Y Combinator's program and has spent the years since building out into a SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified platform used by customer success, product marketing, and training teams. What put it back in front of people this week is a fresh wave of Product Hunt traffic, which is a decent excuse to actually look at whether the tool holds up rather than take the pitch at face value.
How it actually works
You give Clueso raw material in one of two forms: a new screen recording made inside the app, or an existing recording or slide deck you upload. From there, the processing runs in a few distinct steps rather than one black box:
- Script cleanup. The AI strips filler words and awkward phrasing from what you said and rewrites it into a clean script, keeping the structure of what you actually demonstrated.
- Voiceover. That cleaned script gets read back by an AI voice, replacing your own narration (mumbles, ums, and re-takes included) with something that sounds studio-produced.
- Visual polish. Clueso automatically zooms into the parts of the screen where the action is happening, adds captions, and can blur anything sensitive, customer names, internal dashboards, API keys, either automatically or by drawing a box around it yourself.
- Documentation. From the same recording, it separately generates a step-by-step written article with matching screenshots, in rich text, Markdown, or HTML.
Every one of those outputs stays editable after the AI pass. You're not stuck with the first cut. You can rewrite a line of the script, swap the voice, or fix a caption before exporting to MP4, GIF, or a shareable doc link.
What using it actually looks like
The workflow that makes Clueso worth the trade-off is re-recording, not the first pass. Software changes constantly, and the traditional cost of a tutorial video isn't making it, it's the maintenance: someone has to notice the UI moved, re-shoot the relevant section, re-edit, and re-export. Clueso's answer is that when a flow changes, you record the new version of just that flow and the tool regenerates the affected video and doc sections rather than starting over. For a support or product marketing team publishing dozens of short how-to pieces a year, that maintenance cost is usually the real budget line, not the first production.
The other real use case buried in the pitch is scale, not polish. Clueso's own framing is that when a team ships a feature, it can spin up AI agents to generate the launch video, the product demo, and the help tutorial from the same source material at once, instead of three separate production efforts by three different people.
What it costs
Clueso's free tier gives one user 10 minutes of video exports and 15 article exports a month at up to 1080p, watermark-free is not included at that tier. The Solo plan is $40 a month billed yearly for one user, 3 hours of video exports and 180 articles a year, watermark-free, up to 2K resolution. Business runs $120 a month billed yearly for two users, 6 hours of video and 360 articles a year, 4K, live team collaboration, and viewership analytics. Enterprise is custom-priced and adds voice cloning, custom templates, SSO, and a dedicated success manager.
Read those export caps carefully before committing. Minutes and article counts on the paid tiers are annual allocations, not monthly resets, and monthly plans don't roll unused capacity forward. If your team produces content in bursts, budget for the actual annual total, not the monthly sticker price.
Where it falls short
Clueso is genuinely built for teams that publish tutorial and onboarding content on a recurring schedule, customer success, product marketing, IT change management, sales enablement. If that's not your week-to-week job, the tool is overkill. A one-off screen recording for a single client doesn't need a $40 or $120 monthly commitment.
The AI script and voiceover also still need a human pass before anything ships externally. AI-cleaned narration can smooth over a sentence in a way that changes what you actually meant, and an automated documentation article can miss a step that seemed obvious on screen but wasn't said out loud. Treat the AI output as a strong first draft, not a final one.
If all you need is a clean recording with basic cursor zooms and captions, without AI-written scripts, a separate doc, or a subscription, Capptivo does that free, open source, and entirely on your own machine. Clueso earns its price when the job is turning one recording into several finished assets on a recurring basis, not when it's a single quick screen capture.
